Huawei has introduced the MatePad 12 X (2025), an intermediate tablet designed for students, professionals, and digital artists seeking a balance between performance, usability, and affordability. Announced alongside the Watch GT 6 series, the new device improves on its 2024 predecessor with a more refined design, greater performance, advanced display technology, and enhanced connectivity.
Design and Build
The MatePad 12 X stands out with a slim 5.9 mm metal body, lighter 555 g weight, and thinner bezels compared to previous models. It is available in green and silver finishes, maintaining a premium appearance while staying affordable compared to Huawei’s Pro tablets.
Display Features
The display is a primary highlight, featuring a 12-inch IPS LCD panel with 2800 x 1840 resolution, 144 Hz refresh rate, and peak brightness of 1,000 nits. The innovative PaperMatte coating is designed to reduce reflections by up to 50%, delivering a more natural reading and drawing experience similar to paper. The tablet also supports the Huawei M-Pencil Pro stylus, recognizing over 13,000 levels of pressure and gesture controls, making it attractive for digital creators.
Performance and Cooling
Although Huawei does not always disclose full specifications, the MatePad 12 X includes an updated HiSilicon Kirin processor with promises of 27% higher performance than the previous version. The device is equipped with 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and a vapor chamber cooling system to handle sustained performance. While exact benchmarks are pending, the specifications suggest smooth multitasking and everyday use.
Cameras
While tablets are not known for advanced cameras, Huawei provides a decent setup for productivity. The rear 50 MP camera and front 8 MP camera target tasks such as video calls, online classes, and document scanning. These specifications, though modest compared with smartphones, position the tablet as capable enough for professional and educational use.
Battery and Charging
Battery life is another strong aspect, with a 10,100 mAh capacity delivering up to 14 hours of video playback. Charging is supported at 66 W, capable of fully recharging the device in about 85 minutes.
Connectivity and Extras
The MatePad 12 X integrates Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, and USB-C. Audio is handled by a six-speaker system with spatial sound, reinforcing its entertainment focus. A keyboard case with NearLink low-latency technology is included, enhancing productivity. The device runs on HarmonyOS 4.3, offering cross-device integration across Huawei’s ecosystem.
Availability
The MatePad 12 X launches first in Europe at a starting price of €599 (~$706). Huawei has not yet confirmed availability in the US.
